Saiga-12 as a 3 Gun Shotgun
The Saiga-12 is a 12 –gauge shotgun that is designed to visually resemble the AK-47. For this reason, it just looks cool. Its hard to imagine anyone denying that. At first glance, most shooters get very excited and immediately want one, however at every 3 Gun competition I am in, there is someone who has a major jam in his shotgun that causes him to have to stop in the middle of a course to attempt to clear the jam (usually so slowly that he is unable to even finish shooting the course). That person is almost always shooting a Saiga-12 shotgun.
There is talk of being able to modify them to get them to run reliably but it seems that most guys who buy a Saiga end up selling it within a year and going back to a more traditional semi-auto shotgun for 3 gun competitions. That being said, there are some excellent shooters out there who love their Saiga and who shoot superbly with it.
Basically all Saiga-12 configurations are recognizable as AK-47 pattern guns by the large lever-safety on the right side of the receiver, the optic mounting rail on the left side of the receiver and the large top-mounted dust cover held in place by the rear of the recoil spring assembly. The Saiga-12 incorporates an adjustable two-position gas system, for the reason that firing high power loads such as slugs and buckshot generates so much force that the receiver will be damaged if the full power of the gas system is employed without some sort of recoil buffer.
The Saiga-12 is manufactured by the arms division of Izhmash, in Russia.
